How Often Should You Clean Your Carpet?

Deep clean carpet every 12 to 18 months. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), the U.S. carpet industry's trade association, recommends that interval for professional cleaning, and Shaw's care page allows 6 to 18 months depending on traffic. Mohawk's carpet care guide requires professional hot water extraction every 18 months. Vacuuming runs on a separate, faster schedule: daily in high-traffic areas, weekly in light-traffic areas.

Two terms carry the rest of this guide. Professional deep cleaning means hot water extraction, which the Carpet and Rug Institute defines as pressurized hot water spray-injected into the carpet pile and vacuum-extracted almost immediately, flushing out soil and excess moisture. Shaw notes the method is also called steam cleaning. Vacuuming means dry soil removal between those cleanings.

How often should carpet cleaning be done?

Every 12 to 18 months. CRI recommends professional deep cleaning at that interval for homes. Shaw gives a wider range of 6 to 18 months, set by traffic. Mohawk's care guide requires professional hot water extraction every 18 months.

Each source states its own number, and the numbers agree on the ceiling.

Xtreme Cleans provides professional carpet cleaning by truck-mounted hot water extraction across 12 Maryland counties and Baltimore City. The how a visit works walks through the four steps of a visit. Carpet dries in 2 to 4 hours after cleaning. The price is $199 for 3 areas, with stairs and pet-urine treatment quoted separately, and the carpet cleaning cost guide breaks down how that figure is built.

What increases the frequency?

Traffic decides it. Shaw ties its range of 6 to 18 months to traffic, so a busy household belongs near 6 months and a quiet one near 18. CRI adds that pet homes clean every 12 to 18 months or more frequently if necessary.

Four factors move a home toward the short end.

  • Foot traffic. More people crossing a lane means more grit ground into the pile. CRI raises vacuum frequency with traffic for the same reason.
  • Pets. CRI sets pet areas at daily vacuuming and lists "more frequently if necessary" for professional cleaning.
  • Manufacturer care terms. Mohawk's care guide sets professional hot water extraction every 18 months, using products or equipment that carry the CRI Seal of Approval, the industry program that tests carpet cleaning products and equipment. Shaw asks for proof of periodic hot water extraction cleaning with a warranty claim, so keep every invoice.
  • Visible graying. CRI describes graying as fibers crushed and matted down in high-traffic zones. A gray walking lane is a sign that the interval has run out.

What happens if you leave it too long?

Past 18 months, carpet is outside the intervals CRI, Mohawk and Shaw's care page publish. CRI states that skipped cleaning leaves dirt, grit and soil embedded and harder to remove. Embedded soil is a major cause of premature wear.

For the beliefs that get in the way, see common carpet cleaning myths, and the mistakes that shorten the interval are listed in common carpet cleaning mistakes. Three outcomes follow from the CRI and Shaw statements.

  1. Wear. CRI says regular vacuuming removes soil that damages carpet fiber and shortens the carpet's useful life. Deep soil that vacuuming misses does the same work.
  2. Appearance. Matted, soiled fiber in walking lanes reads as gray.
  3. Warranty proof. Shaw's care document asks for proof of periodic hot water extraction cleaning with a warranty claim, so the invoice from each visit matters.

Once the interval is set, one question remains: whether pets or children change it.

Does it differ for pets or children?

Pets change it. Children do not have their own interval. CRI pairs pets with daily vacuuming and professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months or more frequently if necessary. No CRI, Shaw or Mohawk page checked for this guide publishes a separate interval for children.

Treat children as a traffic and spill factor. More foot traffic and more spills push a household toward the short end of the range. Pet accidents are a different problem from routine soil: urine sits in the pile and backing and needs its own treatment, which the pet urine stain removal covers. Xtreme Cleans quotes pet-urine treatment separately from the $199 package. A new puppy or kitten changes the setup from day one; see new puppy or kitten setup.

For spot stains between cleanings, the carpet stain guides list the manufacturer-sourced steps.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you clean your carpet?

Deep clean carpet every 12 to 18 months. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends that interval, and Mohawk's carpet care guide requires professional hot water extraction every 18 months. Vacuum weekly in light-traffic areas and daily in high-traffic areas.

How often should you vacuum carpet?

Vacuum high-traffic and pet areas daily, medium-traffic areas twice a week and light-traffic areas once a week. That schedule comes from the Carpet and Rug Institute. Vacuuming removes dry soil between professional cleanings; it does not replace them.

Can you clean carpet too often?

The manufacturer and CRI guidance checked for this guide sets no upper limit on cleaning frequency and publishes only minimum intervals, from 6 to 18 months. Cleaning more often than the interval is a decision about traffic and appearance, not a published manufacturer limit.

Do pets or children change how often carpet needs cleaning?

Pets do. CRI pairs pets with daily vacuuming and professional cleaning every 12 to 18 months or more frequently if necessary. Children have no separate published interval; more foot traffic and more spills push a household toward the short end of the range.
