A couch collects a different kind of soil from a carpet, and that is why vacuuming stops working on it. Carpet takes grit walked in from outside. A sofa takes body oils, perspiration, skin cells, hair product and food residue transferred directly from people sitting on it, and those soak into the fibre and the foam beneath rather than resting on top. Inspection and fabric test

Loose soil and hair are removed first, then an alkaline enzyme pre-spray at pH 9–10 is applied and left to dwell so it can break down body oils and protein soils rather than just wetting them.
Agitation
A counter-rotating brush works the solution through the fibre. Upholstery fibre is denser and shorter than carpet pile, so without agitation the solution sits on the surface and never reaches the soil that is held below it.
Extraction and acid rinse
Hot-water extraction at 220°F recovers the solution and the soil together, finished with a pH-balanced acid rinse at pH 3–5 so no alkaline residue is left behind to attract new soil.
