A couch collects a different kind of soil from a carpet, and that is why vacuuming stops working on it. Carpet takes grit walked in from outside. A sofa takes body oils, perspiration, skin cells, hair product and food residue transferred directly from people sitting on it, and those soak into the fiber and the foam beneath rather than resting on top. A vacuum lifts the loose surface layer; it cannot touch the part that has absorbed. That is the reason a couch can look vacuumed and still smell, and why the arms and headrests darken before the rest of it does.
A visit covers the whole piece, not just the panels that show: cushions on both faces, arms, back, sides, skirt and the deck underneath the cushions.
The fabric is identified and tested in a hidden area for colorfastness before anything is applied. A fabric we do not clean, or a dye that proves unstable, is identified before the job starts rather than after.
Loose soil and hair are removed first, then an alkaline enzyme pre-spray at pH 9–10 is applied and left to dwell so it can break down body oils and protein soils rather than just wetting them.
A counter-rotating brush works the solution through the fiber. Upholstery fiber is denser and shorter than carpet pile, so without agitation the solution sits on the surface and never reaches the soil that is held below it.
Hot-water extraction at 220°F recovers the solution and the soil together, finished with a pH-balanced acid rinse at pH 3–5 so no alkaline residue is left behind to attract new soil.

Check the tag before you book. Most couches carry a manufacturer's cleaning code on a label under a cushion or beneath the frame. W means water-based cleaning is safe, which is the method used here. Pricing per piece rather than per hour exists for a practical reason: it removes the incentive to rush. A sofa that needs a second pass on the arms takes longer, and on an hourly rate that would cost you more for the same result. Here the number is agreed first.
What can change the figure is the state of the piece rather than its size — heavy pet contamination, urine, or soil that needs a second dwell and a second pass is quoted before work starts, never added afterward. A photograph settles which category a couch falls into faster than a description does.
A single couch takes 45 minutes to 90 minutes to clean, and the cushions are dry in 2 to 4 hours. Truck-mounted extraction with over 150 inches of vacuum lift recovers most of the moisture, which is what keeps the drying time short.
Cleaning time depends on the piece and its condition rather than on the fabric. A loveseat in routine condition is often done inside an hour; a large sectional with heavy soil in the seating positions takes longer because the arms and the seat deck need a second pass. Adding a second piece to the same visit costs far less time than booking it separately, since the setup is already done.
The 2 to 4 hour figure is for truck-mounted equipment. A rental machine or a portable unit has a fraction of the vacuum lift and leaves far more water in the foam, and upholstery cleaned that way commonly stays damp for 6 to 12 hours. On a couch that matters more than it does on a carpet, because the moisture is held inside sealed cushion foam where air cannot reach it — which is how a sofa develops a musty smell that was not there before it was cleaned.
Heat is the other half of it. Our equipment delivers water at 220°F at the wand, and heat is what breaks down body oils. Portable units lose temperature steadily over the course of a job, so the last cushion is cleaned with cooler water than the first.

Most people book because the couch has started to smell or the arms and headrests have darkened while the rest of the fabric still looks acceptable. The other common triggers are a new pet, a spill that has set, allergies, and preparing a house for sale or a new tenant.
